THE SPECIALTY IN SPORTS MEDICINE OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED BY THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION AS A FULL MEDICAL SPECIALTY

With a Delegated Act, number 7894/24, included in ANNEX V of Directive 2005/36/EU and published on 1 June 2024, the specialty in Sports Medicine has been officially recognized by the European Commission as a full specialty.

FIMS President, Prof. Fabio Pigozzi, also on behalf of the Executive Committee, congratulated EFSMA President, Prof. Maurizio Casasco, on this important success which rewards the long tradition of medical training in sports medicine in Europe, a continent where the first school of specialization in sports medicine in the world was founded in Milan, Italy, in 1957.

This achievement has been the finishing line of a long journey that started in 2005 by the EFSMA President Prof. Norbert Bachl and continued with the successive Presidents, Prof. Andrè Debruyne and the late Prof. Joseph Cummiskey together with their respective Executive Committees and the UEMS-MJC President for Sports Medicine, Prof. Nicolas Christodoulou. It also represents an important recognition of the social role of sports medicine and exercise in promoting healthy lifestyles, at the forefront of the fight against non-communicable diseases that kill 41 million people each year, accounting for 74% of all deaths globally.
